Why did we build an Afghanistan War Monument in Grande Prairie Alberta?

We honour all of the soldiers who laid down their lives down for our country during the Afghanistan War, however, there are four soldiers who are directly connected to our city and region, who forever tie us to the Afghanistan War.

And so we felt it fitting to build the monument.

Those four soldiers are:

Master Corporal Timothy Wilson, born in Grande Prairie, 2nd Battalion PPCLI

Master Corporal Raymond Arndt, Loyal Edmonton Regiment

Corporal Joshua Baker, Loyal Edmonton Regiment

Corporal Zach McCormack, Loyal Edmonton Regiment

We felt that it was fitting to have those four soldiers service panels created and have them stand sentinel around the monument that honours all of Canada's Fallen from the Afghanistan War.

We also felt it fitting to have their/our Silver Cross Families present at the unveiling.

*Grande Prairie's Army Training Base 132 was home to "D" Company of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment from 1941 to 1967 when the base was shut down. Our Army Cadets march under the cap badge of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment to this day.
